Russia carries out biggest drone strike after peace talks, says Ukraine

KYIV: Ukraine reported that Russia launched its largest drone assault since the full-scale invasion began in 2022, killing a woman and injuring at least three others in the Kyiv region.

According to Reuters, Ukrainian officials stated the attack came shortly after unsuccessful peace negotiations on Friday.

According to Ukraine’s air force, Russia deployed 273 drones by 8 a.m. local time (0500 GMT), primarily targeting the Kyiv region, along with Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. This surpasses the previous record of 267 drones launched in February, ahead of the invasion’s third anniversary.

Friday’s Istanbul meeting marked the first direct Russia-Ukraine talks in three years. Although it failed to secure a ceasefire, both sides agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners.

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to speak with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Monday.

Ukraine’s authorities said Sunday’s overnight barrage killed a 28-year-old woman and injured three people, including a 4-year-old child, in the Obukhiv district of Kyiv region.

Air raid alerts lasted for nine hours overnight in Kyiv and eastern Ukraine, with multiple air defence operations conducted to counter the strikes, the military said.

“It was a difficult night. Russia consistently uses military pressure to influence negotiations,” said Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Centre for Countering Disinformation.
