Kanchenjunga Diamond Festival begins today

TAPLEJUNG: The ‘Kanchenjunga Diamond Festival-2082’ kicks off today in Taplejung to mark the 70th anniversary of the first successful ascent of Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain.

The festival, organized by the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Management Council, will run until April 7. According to Council Secretary Man Kumar Limbu, the event will feature a range of activities, including an exhibition and sale of local products, traditional food promotion, cultural performances, sports, trekking programs, and photo and video exhibitions.

Six climbers from Taplejung district who have summited Kanchenjunga—Pasang Sherpa, Ngada Sherpa, Lakpa Sherpa, Dawachheten Sherpa, Mingma Gyabu Sherpa, and another Lakpa Sherpa—are set to participate in the celebration.

Held under the slogan “Kanchenjunga Conservation Area: Nature’s Gift, Sustainable Tourism as the Basis for Prosperity”, the festival aims to promote conservation and foster sustainable tourism in the region.

The first successful ascent of Kanchenjunga was achieved on May 25, 1955, by British mountaineers Joe Brown and George Band, who climbed the mountain’s southern face.
