Former King Gyanendra calls for national unity to save Nepal

KATHMANDU: Former King Gyanendra Shah has expressed his strong dissatisfaction with the current state of the country and called for a united effort to preserve the nation’s future.

In a video message released ahead of Democracy Day, he appealed to the people, stressing that his sacrifices were made for the nation’s welfare and should not be perceived as a sign of weakness.

“We acted with generosity for the good of the nation. We gave up our positions and comforts for the people. Sacrifice does not diminish anyone’s dignity, and it should not be seen as weakness,” said the former king.

He reflected on the history of cooperation between the monarchy and the people to strengthen democracy, honoring both the known and unknown martyrs who fought for the cause.

He stressed that democracy should be a system cherished by all, one that protects the rights of every individual, class, and group while advancing the country’s development.

“Democracy must not be reduced to mere debate, conflict, or opposition,” he emphasized. “It should be a socially inclusive and people-centered system. True democracy is not just about words, but about actions that safeguard the identity and existence of all people.”

The former king also expressed concern over the nation’s decline, noting the erosion of Nepal’s history and the ongoing destruction of its foundations.

He pointed out the mass migration of skilled Nepalis seeking better opportunities abroad, the rising national debt, and the collapse of industries and education.

“The outflow of citizens in search of better prospects reflects the failure of the current system. This does not present a beautiful picture of democracy,” he said.

He called for a democracy that fosters hope and trust among the people, acknowledging that for the past three decades, the system has failed to bring happiness to the common people. “Those who claim the system has changed have failed to improve the situation,” he added.

Reaffirming his commitment to the country and its people, the former king stated that the sacrifices made in the past were for the country’s prosperity, and he is prepared to make further sacrifices if needed.

“We stand at a critical juncture,” he said. “To save our nation and preserve national unity, I urge all citizens to join us in striving for Nepal’s progress and prosperity.”
