KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has directed the National Planning Commission (NPC) to focus on poverty alleviation by increasing production, productivity, and entrepreneurship.

During a meeting held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Singha Durbar, on Monday, PM Oli, who also chairs the Commission, highlighted that with most infrastructure development nearing completion, the focus should now shift to skill development, job creation, large-scale production, and investment in the agricultural sector.

“We must take the path of empowering the people. It is not enough to provide assistance alone. We must go on the path of increasing production and self-reliance,” said PM Oli.

He stressed the need to motivate people to be hardworking and reduce poverty by setting a foundation for exercising fundamental rights. He also instructed ministries to come up with concrete plans to boost production and productivity, which would positively impact the national economy.

The Prime Minister further stressed the importance of effective monitoring and evaluation of national pride projects and encouraged initiatives that would foster entrepreneurship, improve service delivery, and enhance good governance.

During the meeting, NPC Vice Chair Prof. Dr. Shivaraj Adhikari provided updates on the implementation of the 16th Plan, challenges encountered, amendments to the National Project Bank standards, systematic analysis of incomplete plans, and improvements to the working procedures for supplementary and special grants.

He also highlighted interactions held with provincial and local levels to strengthen fiscal federalism.

Also present at the meeting were Dr. Yuba Raj Khatiwada, the Prime Minister’s Advisor on Economic and Development Affairs, and Ek Narayan Aryal, Chief Secretary to the Government of Nepal.
