Report proposes upgrading Karnali Provincial Hospital into leading health institution

KATHMANDU: A high-level study committee led by Prof. Dr. Bhagwan Koirala has submitted a comprehensive report on upgrading Karnali Provincial Hospital to Chief Minister Yamalal Kandel.

The report, presented on Sunday at the Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers, outlines strategic recommendations to develop the hospital as a leading health institution and academic center in the province.

Formed four months ago, the six-member committee was tasked with evaluating institutional and structural reforms for the hospital. Prof. Dr. Koirala emphasized the need to resume specialized health services as per Schedule 4 of the Public Health Regulations, 2020, while also strengthening the quality and accessibility of existing healthcare services.

The report highlights the importance of introducing specialized services that have not been operated from the provincial hospital so far, identifying additional income sources, and formulating a long-term plan for sustainable healthcare development.

Chief Minister Kandel acknowledged the significance of the expert report, stating that it incorporates facts and statistics crucial for planning healthcare improvements.

“This initiative aims to build a robust healthcare system for the people of Karnali, which cannot be achieved single-handedly,” he said.

The provincial government is expected to review the recommendations and devise an implementation strategy to elevate Karnali Provincial Hospital as a prominent health and academic institution in the region.
