International Judo Championship to begin tomorrow

KATHMANDU: The 7th International Judo Championship is set to kick off tomorrow (Thursday), jointly organized by the Nepal Confederation of Sports (NECOS) and the National Judo Association.

A total of 250 athletes from various district clubs of Nepal, as well as participants from Bhutan and Thailand, will compete in the tournament, organizers said.

According to Association President Dharma Kumar Shrestha, under-21 athletes will vie in 12 men’s and 11 women’s events.

The finals for 11 events are scheduled for April 17, while the remaining 12 finals will take place on April 18.

For the first time, a para judo competition will also be held, co-organized by NECOS, the National Judo Association, and the Nepal Deaf and Blind Para Judo Association. Events include the men’s under-60 kg and women’s under-52 kg categories.

Shrestha added that top-performing athletes from this event will be selected to represent Nepal at the Deaf Olympics, scheduled to take place in Japan this November.

All matches will be held at the Multipurpose Martial Arts Centre in Khusibu, Kathmandu.

Notably, Austrian judoka Sabrina Filzmoser—four-time Olympian and two-time World Judo Championships bronze medalist—was also present at the press meet.
