Dengue infection on the decline

CHITWAN: With the onset of winter, dengue and scrub typhus infections have been declining among patients visiting hospitals in Chitwan district.

Compared to last year, the number of infections from both diseases has dropped significantly in December. According to the Public Health Office, 113 dengue cases were reported in December during the last fiscal year, while only 12 cases have been recorded in the same period this year.

Office Chief Nirmal Ghimire said that out of 5,923 samples tested so far this fiscal year, 174 people have been diagnosed with dengue.

By December last fiscal year, a total of 1,463 dengue cases had been reported in the district. During that period, 17,353 samples were tested and one death was recorded.

“Dengue infections are much lower this year compared to last year, and the number continues to decline as the season advances,” Ghimire said.

He noted that dengue cases are more common in urban areas and that the disease is transmitted through the bite of female Aedes mosquitoes. He also stressed the need for further study on the circulating dengue strains and their patterns of transmission.
