Hearing concludes in Rabi Lamichhane’s case, verdict awaited

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has concluded the hearing on the case involving Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) chair Rabi Lamichhane, who is currently in Bhairahawa jail over a cooperative fraud case.

The hearing took place under the bench of Justice Tek Prasad Dhungana, and a verdict is now awaited.

Earlier, on Chaitra 22, the Butwal bench of the Tulsipur High Court had ordered Lamichhane to be remanded in custody over alleged embezzlement of savings from the Supreme Cooperative.

Challenging that decision, Lamichhane filed a petition at the Supreme Court last Friday.

Initially, on Magh 13, the Rupandehi District Court had released Lamichhane on a bail of Rs 10 million.

However, the High Court bench comprising Judges Ramesh Dhakal and Swikriti Parajuli overturned the district court’s decision and sent him to jail.

Meanwhile, Lamichhane’s business partner Chhabilal Joshi had already been remanded in custody by the district court.

Justice Dhungana’s bench was assigned to hear Lamichhane’s petition against the High Court’s order.

The case was prioritized and heard as the first item on Sunday’s docket.

The petition was filed on Lamichhane’s behalf by his wife Nikita Poudel. The Supreme Court’s decision is now pending.
