83 days to polls: Committee formed to set population-based inclusion percentages

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has initiated the process of determining proportional representation percentages based on population, as required by the House of Representatives Election Constituency Act, 2074.

The percentage allocations will be set for Dalit, Indigenous Nationalities, Khas Arya, Madhesi, Tharu, and Muslim groups. To facilitate this, a six-member committee has been formed under the coordination of Subhash Kumar Bhattarai, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

The committee includes representatives from the Election Commission, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, and the National Statistics Office.

The committee has been mandated to determine the inclusive base percentage using national census data and to submit its report within three days, according to Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai. The Commission is preparing to finalize the percentages in line with the 2078 National Census.

A high-level discussion was held under the chairmanship of Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, with Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari, Chief Secretary Suman Raj Aryal, Election Commissioner Dr. Janaki Tuladhar, Home Secretary Rameshwor Dangal, Chief Statistics Officer Madhusudan Burlakoti, and other senior officials present, Bhattarai added.
