Shankar Pokharel says ‘Gen-Z’ is a western-imposed identity

BHAKTAPUR: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has said that the term “Gen-Z” does not represent Nepali youth, arguing that it is an identity imposed by Western influence.

Speaking at a UML event in Bhaktapur on Thursday, Pokharel remarked that the concept of “Gen-Z” was introduced by the West and does not align with Nepal’s cultural values or historical continuity.

He said Nepali society has long upheld the harmony of four generations living together as part of Eastern civilization’s identity, but that understanding is being forgotten. “Have we now started recognizing our youth through a label given by the West?” Pokharel asked. “Gen-Z is not our identity — it is one that has been imposed upon us.”

Pokharel also warned that the idea of dividing society into generations is part of a Western strategy to disrupt the social fabric of countries like Nepal. He urged Nepalis to preserve their traditional sense of unity across generations instead of adopting imported concepts that fragment cultural understanding.
