NC calls for swift conclusion of Transitional Justice process

KATHMANDU: The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has emphasized the urgent need to conclude the long-pending issues related to Transitional Justice (TJ).

During a meeting of party office-bearers and former office-bearers held at the residence of party president Sher Bahadur Deuba in Budhanilkantha on Friday, the party stressed the importance of expediting the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP).

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Nepali Congress spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat said that although the legal framework was amended following the Supreme Court’s directive, progress on transitional justice has stalled due to delays in forming the necessary structures.

“It has been too long. The Supreme Court ordered amendments to the law, and we finalized it, but the actual work has not moved forward because the commissions have not yet been formed,” said Mahat. “We have concluded that this issue must be resolved without further delay.”

He further stressed the need for meaningful dialogue with all concerned stakeholders, including political parties, to ensure an impartial and credible process.

“We have concluded that the government should urgently move forward by engaging with stakeholders to resolve the issues of enforced disappearances and truth and reconciliation in an impartial and transparent manner,” Mahat added.

He also underscored the importance of filling all vacant constitutional positions, saying the government must prioritize the completion of all constitutional structures to ensure proper governance and justice delivery.
