What next for Sarbendra Khanal after UML exit?

KATHMANDU: Sarbendra Khanal, the former chief of Nepal Police, who announced his departure from the UML on Sunday, has stated that UML no longer aligns with his beliefs.

In a Facebook post, Khanal shared that he is no longer affiliated with any political party.

Speaking to Khabarhub on Wednesday, Khanal explained that the division between new and old members in UML made it difficult for him to remain in the party.

He said his own principles and policies did not fit within the party’s structure.

“I am a person who follows my own principles. I joined UML believing it could bring good governance and happiness to the people, but I realize now I was wrong,” Khanal said. “I currently have no plans to join any party. I feel being independent is the right choice for me. I will focus on research, study, and exploration.”

Earlier, there had been rumors about Khanal joining the Maoist Party. Many also speculated that Khanal might join Dr Bhim Rawal’s Motherland Awakening Campaign.

When asked about this, Khanal denied the rumors, saying, “There are no plans to join any party right now. I will focus on studying. I don’t think I will affiliate with any group until 2027 AD.

Khanal joined UML on in 2022, and was given the party ticket to contest the federal elections from Kathmandu-6 and Tanahun.

However, Khanal lost both elections, facing criticism from UML leaders after his defeat.
