HMPV poses no new threat, says Health Ministry

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Health and Population has clarified that the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) reported in China is a common and not a new virus.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the ministry responded to rumors and misleading information circulating in media and social networks, urging the public to disregard such reports.

The ministry explained that an increase in respiratory infections during winter is typical, and HMPV is a regular virus that causes cold-like symptoms.

It has been seen in Nepal in the past, and the country is fully equipped with the necessary capabilities and preparations to handle such cases.

“There is a low risk of severe complications from this virus. It generally affects individuals with weak immune systems, children, and elderly people,” the ministry said.

The ministry has increased monitoring and vigilance through various health agencies, including the Department of Health Services and the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division.

To prevent transmission, the ministry urged everyone to follow standard health practices, such as wearing masks, avoiding crowded places, and washing hands regularly.

In case of illness, people are advised to avoid close contact with others, wash their hands with soap and water, seek medical advice from a healthcare provider, and contact the ministry’s health helpline at 1115 for guidance.
