4.5 metric tons of waste managed during Bagmati cleanup in Gothatar

KATHMANDU: Under the slogan “Two hours of volunteer service for the nation every week,” around 4.5 metric tons of non-degradable waste were managed during a cleanup drive at the Gothatar Yellow Bridge area of the Bagmati River.

The 652nd week of the Bagmati Cleanup Mega Campaign took place on Saturday, focusing on the New Settlement–Yellow Bridge stretch of the river. According to campaigner Kishor Singh Shahi, a large amount of non-degradable waste was found dumped directly into the river.

The cleanup saw participation from Project Chief of the High-Powered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee, Prakash Aryal, Gokarneshwor Municipality Spokesperson and Ward No. 5 Chairperson Narayan Bahadur Subedi, along with around 50 volunteers. The collected waste was managed with the support of the municipality’s trucks, Shahi informed.

According to campaign member Ishwar Pudasaini, the next cleanup drive, scheduled for November 14 (Kartik 29), will be held at Jambu Danda, near the police office, and along both banks of the Bagmati River in the Gothatar area.

Launched on May 19, 2013, the Bagmati Cleanup Mega Campaign has been running every Saturday morning for two hours, regardless of weather conditions, festivals, or other challenges.

Initiated under the leadership of former Chief Secretary Leelamani Paudyal, the campaign claims to be one of the longest-running environmental initiatives of its kind in the world.
