Nepali Congress leader Aftab Alam passes away



KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Mohammad Aftab Alam passed away at 2:58 a.m. this morning while undergoing treatment at Kathmandu Medical College, Sinamangal in Kathmandu, hospital sources said.

Alam had recently been placed on a ventilator after his health deteriorated. According to a reliable source, his body has been taken to Rajpur, Rautahat, for the final rites.

The former lawmaker had been suffering from heart-related problems and had also suffered a brain stroke after being released from Nakkhu Jail. He was previously treated at Annapurna Neuro Hospital in Maitighar.

Alam came into the national spotlight after being accused of burning injured people alive in a brick kiln following a blast during preparations for the 2008 Constituent Assembly elections. The Rautahat District Court had found him guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

However, the High Court later overturned the verdict, citing insufficient evidence to confirm the crime and acquitted Alam along with other defendants. The case is currently pending before the Supreme Court, where an appeal has been filed against the High Court’s decision.
