HoR session: Lawmakers urge govt to address contemporary issues

KATHMANDU: Lawmakers raised several pressing concerns during Wednesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, calling on the government to act on various contemporary issues.

Aman Lal Modi alleged irregularities in the procurement process of the Jagadulla Hydropower Project in Dolpa district. Citing violations of the Public Procurement Act and regulations, he urged the government to investigate the matter and take steps to curb the illicit outflow of capital from Nepal, including efforts to repatriate funds already sent abroad.

Bimala Subedi highlighted a tragic road accident at Koteshwor-Tinkune earlier today that claimed one life and injured three others. She demanded compensation for the victim’s family and proper treatment for the injured.

She also criticized the government’s failure to enforce its policy of phasing out 20-year-old vehicles, which she argued contributes to road safety issues.

Prabhu Sah expressed concern that the Armed Police Force was harassing citizens in the border areas of the Tarai. He also emphasized the need to prevent a shortage of chemical fertilizers ahead of the planting season.

Bhagawati Chaudhary urged the government to allocate adequate budget for Gadhi Rural Municipality in Sunsari, citing its tourism potential. Bhanu Bhakta Joshi pressed for the swift passage of a bill to formally establish all institutional structures of the Sahid Dasharath Chanda Health Science University.

Manish Jha called on the government to expedite the long-delayed construction of an international airport in Janakpurdham.

Similarly, Mahendra Kumar Raya urged budget allocation to support irrigation infrastructure in drought-affected areas of Mahottari district, including Manara Shisawa Municipality and Samasi Rural Municipality.

Mahesh Bartaula discussed the feasibility of operating podways as a form of smart public transport in Nepal, while Mahesh Basnet emphasized the need to reduce electricity tariffs for drinking water usage.

Menaka Kumari Pokhrel appealed to the government to urgently address the growing problem of youth drug abuse.

Other lawmakers, including Madhav Sapkota, Ranju Kumari Jha, Rana Kumari Balampaki Magar, Ranendra Barali, Yogendra Mandal, and Rajendra Kumar Rai, also raised concerns on a range of national and local issues, urging the government to respond effectively.
