Teachers’ Federation announces fresh protests

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Teachers’ Federation has decided to launch a fresh round of protests starting from the second week of Bhadra (late-August), citing the government’s failure to move forward with the School Education Bill as previously agreed.

Federation Chair Laxmi Kishor Subedi said the decision was made during a meeting held in Kathmandu on Thursday. He added that a protest mobilization committee would draft the program of agitation, which would then be approved by the federation’s national committee.

Ahead of the protests, the federation has also called a full national committee meeting for Bhadra 3 and 4 (August 19–20), Subedi informed.

Expressing concern over the lack of progress, Subedi stated that he was unaware of any developments regarding the bill within the parliamentary education committee. He added that a proper assessment of the bill’s provisions could only be made once it is formally tabled in the House of Representatives.

The meeting also reviewed the current status of the previous agreement between the federation and the government. Subedi said the draft bill does not appear to address the concerns of teachers and education staff comprehensively, nor does it seem to offer solutions to the broader issues in the school education sector.
