Flood destroys diversion in Dumkibas, disrupts traffic on Narayangadh–Butwal road

BUTWAL: Vehicular movement has come to a complete halt along the Narayangadh–Butwal section of the East-West Highway after a diversion constructed at Dumkibas in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat–Susta East) was swept away by flooding.

The temporary road built over the Dumkibas stream in Binayi Tribeni Rural Municipality–1 was washed away by sudden floods on Friday, cutting off traffic in both directions.

According to Superintendent of Police Yadav Dhakal of the District Police Office, Nawalparasi (Bardaghat–Susta East), passenger and small vehicles are being rerouted through an inner alternative road via Sardi from the Hongshi Gate area. Meanwhile, freight vehicles have been managed by halting them in a single lane.

Officials have said that repair work on the diversion will begin once the water level in the stream recedes.

The diversion had been facilitating transportation since December 10, after the old bridge at Dumkibas collapsed while an Indian heavy truck was crossing it. The Butwal–Narayangadh Road Project has stated that a new bridge over the Binayi stream is under construction and will be operational before the monsoon season.

In a related update, the damaged bridge at Chormara in Madhyabindu Municipality–7, also part of the East-West Highway, has been reopened for use from this afternoon. The bridge, which had developed major cracks on May 11, has now been repaired and reopened, according to Madhyabindu Mayor Bhimlal Adhikari.
