KATHMANDU: Lawmakers have urged the government to take measures to end the situation in which farmers do not receive fair prices for their produce while consumers are forced to buy the same goods at high prices.
Speaking during the special session of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, lawmaker Sushila Dhakal Acharya said the government should take effective measures to control artificial price hikes in the market.
Similarly, lawmaker Ganesh Karki said the dignity of lawmakers is established through their work, not their attire. He said lawmakers entrusted with the responsibility of changing the country’s future must also change themselves.
Lawmaker Radhika Ramthel drew the government’s attention to the need for long-term flood-control measures to protect people living in disaster-prone areas. She called for necessary preparations to prevent a recurrence of the flooding previously experienced in Birendranagar.
Lawmaker Prabha Karki said consumers were suffering due to a shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and urged the government to take the issue of supply seriously.
Lawmaker Basumaya Tamang said many people had been left homeless by the Bhotekoshi flood, with elderly people and children among those most affected. She urged the government to take special initiatives for the safe resettlement and rehabilitation of those affected.
Lawmaker Dr Anand Bahadur Chand said Nepal has not conducted sufficient research on artificial intelligence (AI) and stressed the need to prioritize research in the field. He also called for arrangements to introduce AI-related subjects in universities.
Lawmaker Govinda Panthi said families of people missing in the Bhotekoshi flood could face various difficulties because deaths cannot be officially declared in the absence of bodies or other evidence.
Lawmaker Buddhiprasad Pantha said corruption was increasing at the local level and stressed the need to maintain transparency and accountability while addressing economic problems.
Lawmaker Lalitakumari emphasized the need for environmentally friendly infrastructure development. Citing the growing effects of climate change on daily life in Madhes, she urged the government to ensure that development and construction projects are environmentally friendly.
Lawmaker Som Sharma called for the immediate release of those involved in the Gen-Z movement.
