Wild elephants enter settlements, locals in panic

KANCHANPUR: Wild elephants have begun entering Jai-Parsiya village in Laljhadi Rural Municipality-4, Kanchanpur, even during daytime hours, triggering panic among local residents.

On Tuesday afternoon, an adult male elephant was seen roaming through the village, walking along roads and farmland. Locals created a commotion and eventually chased the elephant back toward Shuklaphanta National Park. However, the fear remains that the elephant may return at any time, said local resident Laxman Rana.

“Elephants destroy our crops every year. Last year, one person was even killed,” he said. “We are terrified and are calling on the authorities to take effective measures to control the elephants.”

Wild elephants have been entering Jai-Parsiya village annually, causing repeated damage to crops, property, and even leading to loss of life. The elephants are believed to be passing through the Laljhadi Conservation Area before reaching the settlement, said Nirmal Rana, chairperson of Laljhadi Rural Municipality.

Karunkar Joshi, chief of the Laljhadi Subdivision Forest Office, confirmed that five wild elephants are currently residing in the Laljhadi Conservation Area. He stated that the elephants frequently move between the conservation area and Shuklaphanta National Park. Locals have been advised to remain alert, as the elephants can enter the settlement at any time.
