NUP Chair Ranjita demands fair investigation into Resham’s arrest

KATHMANDU: Chairperson of the Nagarik Unmukti Party, Ranjita Shrestha, has called for a fair and thorough investigation into the arrest of her party’s patron, Resham Chaudhary.

Speaking in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Shrestha emphasized that the rights of individuals must be upheld and questioned how state mechanisms could override those rights.

“How can the state machinery place a person’s rights below the law?” she asked. “This incident demands serious scrutiny. It’s not just about the arrest of one individual—it undermines public faith in federalism, inclusion, and democracy.”

She also condemned what she called “administrative arbitrariness” on Baisakh 17 and demanded accountability. “There must be a fair investigation into what transpired. We are still waiting for answers,” she said.

Shrestha further questioned how an elected representative and party patron could be arrested from the venue of a public event, especially when she herself is part of the ruling coalition.

“I am in the government—we are on the ruling side. But the essence of democracy lies in standing with the truth,” she said. “I want to ask the government: how can an elected representative be arrested in this manner, right from a public event?”
