Former CJ Kalyan Shrestha expresses concern over Nepal’s recurring transitional phases

KATHMANDU: Former Chief Justice Kalyan Shrestha has expressed concern that Nepal has repeatedly undergone transitional phases, hindering the country’s stability and development.

Speaking at a program titled “National Interest Above All” organized by the Citizen Initiative for National Unity in Lalitpur on Wednesday, Shrestha said that despite multiple political movements leading to regime changes, the people’s living conditions have remained stagnant, fueling dissatisfaction and prolonging instability.

“Nepal has witnessed numerous movements, almost once every decade,” he said. “Each time, the system changes, but the situation of the people does not. Such prolonged transitional phases create instability in the country.”

He said that frequent political upheavals and delayed institutional reforms have prevented Nepal from achieving sustainable governance and socio-economic progress.

At the same event, Gen-Z representative Monika Neupane highlighted the urgent need for leadership transfer and internal transformation within political parties, adding that the compulsion of citizens to migrate abroad for livelihood has deepened frustration among the youth.
