Dhangadhi profiting from waste recycling program

GODAVARI (KAILALI):  Dhangadhi Sub-metropolis Corporation has generated Rs 4.55 million by converting municipal waste into sellable materials, officials said Tuesday.

The city’s Waste Segregation Centre in Ward No. 2 has processed and sold both recyclable and biodegradable waste. The center earned Rs 2.55 million in the previous fiscal year and an additional Rs 2 million in the first eight months of the current fiscal year.

Ashok Awasthi, head of the city’s environment, drinking water, and sanitation management branch, stated that the center began operations at the start of the 2023-24 fiscal year. Nanda Devi Service Centre operates the facility under a five-year contract.

The center processes 21 tons of waste daily, collected from nine of the city’s 19 wards. Waste is sorted into categories including plastic, metal, and paper, and then sold. Biodegradable waste is used to produce biogas.

The facility uses machines to shred and compress waste. The processed materials are sold in markets throughout Nepal. Around 140 people are employed at the center.
