Govt committed to electrifying transport and cooking, says Energy Minister Ghising

KATHMANDU: Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Kulman Ghising has reiterated the government’s commitment to transitioning transportation and cooking systems to electricity and alternative energy.

Speaking at the 29th anniversary of the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) on Tuesday, Minister Ghising said progress has been made, but significant work remains.

He highlighted the increasing use of electric vehicles and the need to replace gas-based cooking with induction or other alternative energy technologies. Ghising said the government is revising policies to facilitate the expansion of charging stations and is preparing a roadmap for effective solar energy deployment in irrigation systems.

The minister also pointed out the government’s focus on developing wind power technologies and called on the private sector to participate actively, noting that interest so far has been limited. “If anyone is interested in wind power, the government will provide support,” he said.

Acknowledging the AEPC’s contributions in remote areas and to underprivileged families, Ghising emphasized that the scope for alternative energy work has expanded and must be implemented effectively.

Energy Secretary Chiranjeevi Chataut added that the centre has played a significant role in reducing climate change impacts, improving energy efficiency, and cutting carbon emissions, while supporting the government’s goal of 100% electricity access, particularly in rural areas.

AEPC Executive Director Navaraj Dhakal outlined the centre’s ongoing work in solar energy, irrigation, drinking water, and improved iron stoves, reporting that eight carbon emission reduction projects have generated $36 million in revenue. Currently partnering with 136 local governments, AEPC aims to reach one million households in the next five years and expand access to 3.7 million households using various technologies, creating 40,000 jobs in the process.

On the occasion, Minister Ghising also unveiled the solar thermal roadmap and implementation plan, and a blood donation program was organized as part of the anniversary celebrations.
