KATHMANDU: The Bhotekoshi flood has affected 18 schools in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading, with 11 schools suffering complete damage and total losses estimated at Rs 937.3 million.
The findings are based on the Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDNA) report prepared by the National Planning Commission and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. The report estimates that school buildings and educational assets sustained damage worth Rs 937.3 million.
According to the assessment, 56 buildings across the 18 affected schools were damaged. A total of 152 rooms sustained partial damage, while another 156 rooms were completely destroyed.
In Rasuwa, one school in Gosainkunda Rural Municipality was affected, with 11 rooms in two buildings completely destroyed. The damage is estimated at Rs 3.75 million.
Similarly, three schools in Uttargaya Rural Municipality suffered extensive damage, with 36 rooms across six buildings completely destroyed. The estimated loss stands at Rs 12.29 million.
The impact was particularly severe in Nuwakot’s Bidur Municipality, where nine schools were affected. Of the 32 damaged buildings, 61 rooms suffered partial damage and 89 rooms were completely destroyed. The total loss in the municipality has been estimated at Rs 366.2 million.
In Dhading, three schools in Galchhi Rural Municipality were affected. Ten buildings containing 77 rooms sustained partial damage, while eight rooms were completely destroyed. The estimated loss stands at Rs 106.1 million.
One school in Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality also suffered complete damage to 12 rooms across two buildings, resulting in an estimated loss of Rs 41 million.
Similarly, one school in Siddhalek Rural Municipality sustained partial damage, with 14 rooms across four buildings affected. The damage has been valued at Rs 143 million.
In addition to physical infrastructure, educational assets worth an estimated Rs 249.3 million were damaged by the flood. The RDNA report estimates that approximately Rs 4.23 billion will be required to rehabilitate and restore the education sector in the affected areas.
