Govt working with goal of achieving zero carbon emissions: Energy Minister

KATHMANDU: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Deepak Khadka, has said that the government is committed to achieving zero carbon emissions.

Speaking at an event today while receiving a memorandum from a foundation campaigning to end the use of coal energy, Minister Khadka stated that various strategic programs have been launched to reduce carbon emissions to zero.

He noted that the government is initiating legal and policy-level reforms to promote green energy and sustainable development.

Highlighting Nepal’s clean energy ambitions, Minister Khadka said the government has set a target of generating 28,000 megawatts of hydropower by 2035. He expressed confidence that this goal would play a pivotal role in Nepal’s transition to clean energy.

Minister Khadka also stated that with the increasing use of renewable energy, Nepal’s reliance on coal imports from India is expected to decline.

He emphasized that the impacts of climate change are already being felt in Nepal’s mountainous regions and called for collective effort to protect the environment.
