Prachanda calls for separate law to regulate gold and silver business

KAILALI: Former Prime Minister and Chair of the Maoist Center, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has highlighted the need for a separate law to regulate the large-scale gold and silver business in Nepal.

Speaking at the 12th foundation day of the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Federation in Kailali, Dahal said that such a significant industry cannot be adequately regulated without specific legal provisions.

“As the Prime Minister, I had initiated discussions on how to regulate this business. The demand for a separate law is justified, as businesses across the country have been raising their voices on this matter for a long time,” he said.

Dahal also backed the request of businessmen who have called for the wholesale gold and silver trade to be expanded beyond Kathmandu to provincial capitals. He noted that such a move would align with the spirit of federalism in Nepal and assured his commitment to pursuing this change.

He further addressed the existing tax system on luxury goods, particularly alcohol, stating that the current legal framework is flawed and should be reformed.

Dahal recalled that during his tenure as Prime Minister, a policy aimed at promoting traditional gold and silver businesses was included in the national budget. He urged businessmen to continue advocating for its implementation, adding that his party would support these efforts.
