HPV vaccination campaign begins in Nepal

PM Oli officially launches human papillomavirus vaccination campaign



KATHMANDU: Prime Minister PM) KP Sharma Oli officially launched the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign today.

The Prime Minister visited Shivapuri Higher Secondary School in Baluwatar, where he handed vaccination materials to health workers from Kathmandu Metropolitan-3. The nationwide campaign will run until February 18.

The campaign targets girls from grades six to ten, with the Department of Health Services also ensuring that out-of-school girls aged 10-14 have access to the vaccine.

Under this vaccination drive, 1,688,900 girls are expected to receive the vaccine, which helps protect against cervical cancer.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in Nepal, causing an average of four deaths each day.

The disease is primarily caused by a persistent infection with the human papillomavirus.
