UML leadership plans crackdown on internal dissent

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has indicated a firm stance against internal dissent, warning leaders against defying party decisions.

Speaking at a gathering of the UML Mass Organization Coordination Mechanism in Baluwatar on Saturday, Oli emphasized that mass organizations must act according to institutional decisions rather than individual opinions.

“There should be no personal agenda. Organizations must follow the party’s collective decisions,” Oli said, addressing leaders of the UML’s 23 affiliated organizations.

According to a leader present at the meeting, participants were warned that those who speak against party policies or leadership would “be taught a lesson.” The message was clear: the party will no longer tolerate dissent in the name of individual freedom or personal opinion.

This directive comes amid a broader crackdown on UML leaders expressing support for former President Bidya Devi Bhandari. Several mass organizations, including the Youth Association and the Nepal Sports Federation, have already taken disciplinary action against members for social media posts and public statements perceived as opposing Oli’s leadership.

A participant in the Baluwatar meeting said, “It was agreed that those who disrupt party unity through public criticism or social media activity must face consequences—even if there is no personal grudge involved.”

The meeting, attended by the in-charges, chairpersons, and general secretaries of all UML mass organizations, was coordinated by Bhanubhakta Dhakal. He stressed the need for unity, discipline, and adherence to party statutes in order to build a stronger UML.

“We must not follow individuals, but follow the party line,” said several mass organization leaders during the session. A coordinated mobilization effort has now been planned to align all affiliated organizations with official party policy.

Earlier the same day, at an event marking the 28th memorial day of Tulsilal Amatya at the UML central office in Chyasal, Oli reflected on historic missteps within the communist movement. He argued that the party’s failure to allow Pushpalal Shrestha to become general secretary in 1951 led to long-term instability.

He also praised the contributions of various leaders, including Tulsilal Amatya, and highlighted their vision for a united people’s movement—something Oli claims was realized during the 1990 political movement and later efforts toward drafting the constitution, which culminated in 2072 BS (2015 AD).
