Maoist standing committee meeting: Former Vice President Pun participates as Vice Chair

KATHMANDU: The Standing Committee meeting of the main opposition party, CPN (Maoist Center), is underway at party chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda’s residence in Khumaltar.

The meeting is discussing the division of responsibilities among central members, future party strategies, and possible changes in provincial in-charges.

The party’s central committee meeting from January 5–7 had decided on the division of responsibilities and entrusted Prachanda with finalizing the allocations. However, a prior discussion at Parisdanda had failed to reach a consensus.

During the central committee meeting, Prachanda involved former Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun as a vice chair. He had stated that Pun was included in the party as per his own interest. Pun was seated alongside other vice chairs, including Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Agni Sapkota, Krishna Bahadur Mahara, and Pampha Bhusal.

However, disagreements among leaders regarding Pun’s exact role within the party had stalled the process. To resolve this, Dahal has now included him in the Standing Committee meeting to assign responsibilities. Pun is expected to be officially nominated as a vice chair of the party.

Since participating in the central committee meeting, Pun has been increasing his involvement in Maoist politics, with Prachanda preparing to formally reinstate him in the party leadership.
