38 gates of Koshi Barrage opened as river flow surges

SUNSARI: In response to rising water levels in the Saptakoshi River, authorities have opened 38 out of 56 gates at the Koshi Barrage to manage the increased flow and reduce flood risk.

Heavy and continuous rainfall in the hills has caused the river’s discharge to surge. By 10 p.m., the flow reached 273,925 cubic feet per second (cusecs), up from 256,010 cusecs at 4 p.m., when 34 gates were open.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Yogaraj Khatri, spokesperson for the District Police Office, said the water flow is climbing quickly.

“The barrage’s red warning light is on, which is triggered when flow surpasses 150,000 cusecs, signaling a potential hazard and urging vigilance among residents and officials,” he stated.

Although immediate flooding is not expected, persistent rain in the hills is steadily pushing water levels higher.

Residents near the Saptakoshi River are being urged to stay alert and avoid flood-prone areas, DSP Khatri added.
