Social Media Bill to strengthen national unity: Communications Minister Gurung



LAMJUNG: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has stated that the Social Media Bill, 2081, has been introduced with the aim of strengthening national unity.

While inaugurating the eighth district convention of Press Chautari Nepal, Lamjung district chapter, Minister Gurung said that the bill was introduced to embrace the fundamental principles of democracy and the values of freedom of the press and to make them more effective in practical terms.

“The bill has been presented in the parliament, and necessary discussions will indeed take place,” he said, “The bill has been introduced to strengthen national sovereignty, independence, and unity.” Mentioning that there is an effort to regulate and organize social media, he clarified that there is no intention to control it.

“The government is aware of the issue of the right to information, which is a fundamental right. A bill has been presented in such a way that it does not stifle the people’s freedom of expression and press freedom,” he said.

He praised the role played by the Press Chautari for the country and society, and emphasized that journalists should work towards prosperity and the building of a civilized society while standing in favor of democracy.

Minister Gurung inaugurates rural municipality building

Meanwhile, Minister Gurung inaugurated the office building of Marsyangdi Rural Municipality amidst a programme held in Bhulbhule, Marsyangdi–8 today. Arjun Gurung, the chairperson of the rural municipality, said “With the completion of the three-story building consisting of 28 rooms, it will now be easier to provide services to the people.”
