Madhav Nepal suggests Jhala Nath Khanal resign from Unified Socialist

KATHMANDU: CPN (Unified Socialist) chair and former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has suggested that the party’s senior leader Jhala Nath Khanal step down from the party after speaking against its official line.

Speaking to reporters in Biratnagar on Friday, Nepal said Khanal’s recent remarks, that splitting from CPN-UML was a mistake, were in direct contradiction to the party’s policy.

“On moral grounds, he should bid farewell to the party,” Nepal stated, adding that Khanal had repeatedly gone against institutional decisions and that his comments held little weight as a result.

Responding to a query, Nepal also remarked that there was no constitutional or legal bar preventing former presidents or vice presidents from reentering politics, and that such decisions were entirely personal.

On the broader political situation, Nepal said there was little chance of forming an alternative government so long as Sher Bahadur Deuba of Nepali Congress and KP Sharma Oli of CPN-UML remained aligned. He argued that although the current government has failed across sectors, no replacement was likely under present conditions.

Nepal said his party is currently focused on strengthening its organizational structure and activating the Socialist Front. He further clarified that while his party is working in cooperation with the Maoist Centre, there is no discussion about merging the two parties at present.
