Rift deepens as school staff reject 9-point agreement with govt

KATHMANDU: The Nepal School Staff Council has rejected the recent nine-point agreement signed between the Government of Nepal and the Nepal Teachers’ Federation, deepening internal rifts among stakeholders involved in the ongoing month-long protest.

In a joint statement issued by Council Chairperson Gangaram Tiwari and General Secretary Shantinath Yogi, the Council, which represents school administrative and support personnel, stated that it was excluded from the negotiation process and strongly opposed the terms of the agreement.

Yogi noted that the deal was struck on the 29th day of the protest, shortly after the Federation announced the second phase of street demonstrations. The Council criticized the Federation for abruptly ending its protest after the agreement, claiming this move ignored the broader concerns of all school-level staff.

“The Nepal School Staff Council completely distances itself from this agreement,” the statement read. “Any settlement reached without our formal involvement is unacceptable and invalid.”

The Council also mentioned plans to hold an internal meeting to decide on future actions, including the potential launch of new protest programs. The dispute highlights a growing divide between teaching and non-teaching staff over the handling of the School Education Bill and labor rights.
