Vice President Yadav calls for global support in combating climate change

Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav has called for increased international support to help Nepal address the growing impacts of climate change and implement effective mitigation strategies.

Highlighting Nepal’s heightened vulnerability compared to other nations, he underscored the urgent need for strategic and collective action to tackle the climate crisis.

Speaking at a program titled “Multi-stakeholder Dialogue on Climate Change: Charting the Strategic Voice for Nepal”, organized by the Institute for Strategic and Socio-Economic Research (ISSR) in Kathmandu on Thursday, Vice President Yadav said Nepal is now facing the consequences of both global and domestic failures in climate response.

PM Oli and NC President Deuba hold talks

Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba met today for high-level talks. According to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, the meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s Office in Singha Durbar. Although Maoist Centre Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda was also invited, sources say he did not attend the meeting.

The discussions are reportedly centered on recent political developments, the government’s upcoming annual policies and programs, and other key national matters.

Reactionaries have been exposed; it’s over now: PM Oli

Prime Minister (PM) KP Oli has reiterated that there is no longer any possibility of reactionary forces making a comeback in Nepal’s political landscape. Speaking at the inauguration of the Koshi Investment Summit in Biratnagar on Thursday, Prime Minister Oli said that while there have been attempts by regressive elements to re-enter the political arena, such efforts have no future.

“Federalism and republicanism are relatively new in Nepal, so attempts at regression are not surprising. Such efforts are made globally. But in Nepal, there is no possibility for these forces to return,” he said. Referring to recent political developments, Oli added, “They revealed their character on March 28. Now, it’s over.”

Teachers’ Federation faces backlash from school staff over unaddressed demands

Tensions flared at a program organized by the Nepal Teachers Federation on Thursday, as school employees expressed strong dissatisfaction with the agreement reached between the government and the Federation the previous night.

The event, held at Ratna Rajya School in Kathmandu to brief stakeholders on the agreement, descended into dispute and confrontation. A group of school employees, visibly angry, protested at the venue, claiming their demands were completely ignored in the deal signed by Federation President Laxmi Kishor Subedi and Education Minister Raghuji Pant.

President Paudel to present govt’s Policies and Programs tomorrow

President Ram Chandra Paudel is set to present the government’s Policies and Programs for the Fiscal Year 2082/83 BS (2025/26 AD) before a joint session of the Federal Parliament at 3:00 PM on May 2.

According to the Federal Parliament Secretariat, preparations for the address are in their final stages. The President will deliver his speech to a joint session of the National Assembly and the House of Representatives at the Federal Parliament Building in New Baneshwor.

Teachers’ month-long street protest called off

The teachers’ street protest, which had continued for nearly a month, has been called off today following a nine-point agreement with the government. The breakthrough came after talks between teacher representatives and Education Minister Raghuji Pant concluded with a formal agreement on Wednesday. The Council of Ministers endorsed all points of the agreement the same day.

With the suspension of all protest activities, Minister Pant announced that student enrollment will begin immediately, and regular educational activities—halted for weeks—will now resume.

PM Oli calls for broader access to employment opportunities

Prime Minister (PM) KP Oli has emphasized the need to ensure that all citizens have broad and equitable access to employment opportunities. Speaking at the launch of the ‘Shramsansar’ online portal on the occasion of the 136th International Workers’ Day (May Day), PM Oli highlighted the importance of addressing challenges related to foreign employment.

He stressed that all government services related to labor, employment, and social security should be made easily accessible by integrating them into the Nagarik App.

Rift deepens as school staff reject 9-point agreement with govt

The Nepal School Staff Council has rejected the recent nine-point agreement signed between the Government of Nepal and the Nepal Teachers’ Federation, deepening internal rifts among stakeholders involved in the ongoing month-long protest.

In a joint statement issued by Council Chairperson Gangaram Tiwari and General Secretary Shantinath Yogi, the Council, which represents school administrative and support personnel, stated that it was excluded from the negotiation process and strongly opposed the terms of the agreement.

Workers’ toil drives the nation forward: PM Oli

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has extended his best wishes to workers in Nepal and abroad on the occasion of International Labour Day. In a message shared on social media, PM Oli acknowledged the invaluable contributions of workers, stating that society has endured and the nation has progressed through their sweat and dedication.

Recalling the initial criticism and satire he faced while introducing the contribution-based social security scheme for workers, Oli noted that the initiative has now benefited over two million workers.

PM Oli inaugurates Koshi Province Investment Summit

Prime Minister KP Oli inaugurated the Koshi Province Investment Summit today, marking the start of a two-day event organized by the provincial government. The summit is being held at the Birendra Auditorium in Biratnagar. Organizers believe the event will be a milestone in the economic transformation of Koshi Province, which they say offers strong potential for investment and development.

According to Dr. Saroj Koirala, Executive Director of the Investment Authority, a total of 71 projects will be presented during the summit, requiring an estimated investment of Rs 173.49 billion. These projects span various sectors such as tourism, agriculture, industry, energy, infrastructure, information technology, and services.

Dr. Baburam says EPG chapter closed, urges Oli-Modi talks

Amid growing diplomatic silence between Nepal and India, former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai returned from a visit to Delhi, calling for high-level talks between Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He also confirmed that the long-stalled Eminent Persons Group (EPG) report is effectively defunct and proposed moving forward through direct bilateral dialogue.

Dr. Bhattarai’s visit comes at a time when relations between the two countries appear strained. Prime Minister Oli has not visited India since assuming office last year, and concerns have been raised in Kathmandu over perceived Indian media support for Nepal’s royalist movement.

UML aims to increase party membership to 750,000 by Statute General Convention

The CPN-UML has announced its plan to expand party membership to 750,000 ahead of its upcoming Statute General Convention. Declaring this year as the “year of internal party strengthening,” Organization Department Secretary Madhav Dhungel said the party has set a target to increase membership to 6 percent of the total number of voters by the time of the convention.

According to Dhungel, instructions have been issued to finalize new memberships and renewals and submit them to provincial committees by the end of the Nepali month of Baisakh (mid-May).

Speaker Devraj Ghimire has emphasized the need for cooperation among all stakeholders to promote dignified labor by ensuring social security, skill development, a technology-friendly environment, equal opportunities, and workers’ rights.

International Labour Day marked today

International Labour Day was observed today across Nepal with various programs organized by labor unions and workers’ groups, commemorating the historic victory of laborers in securing the right to an eight-hour workday and other legal protections. To mark the occasion, trade unions and labor organizations organized a range of events nationwide.

President Paudel emphasizes boosting production and productivity

President Ram Chandra Paudel has underscored the need to enhance national production and productivity. Nepali Congress (NC) President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said the party has consistently played a vital role in the advancement of the Trade Union Act, Labour Act, and the Social Security Fund in Nepal.

Gold price down by Rs 4,600 per tola today

The price of gold in the Nepali market dropped significantly on Thursday. According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Federation, the price of gold fell by Rs 4,600 per tola.

With this decline, gold was traded at Rs 183,500 per tola, compared to Rs 188,100 on Wednesday. Similarly, the price of silver has also gone down. It was traded at Rs 1,915 per tola, a decrease of Rs 50.

IFC and FNCCI explore collaboration for economic growth

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) have held discussions aimed at enhancing Nepal’s economic development, employment generation, and mutual cooperation.

During a meeting at the FNCCI Secretariat, IFC South Asia Regional Head Gregory Smith and FNCCI Vice President Hem Raj Dhakal exchanged views on strengthening partnership and coordination between the two institutions.

Workers unaffected by public holiday

Transport Office Hetauda collects over Rs 456 million in nine months

The Transport Management Office in Hetauda, Makawanpur, has collected over Rs 456.6 million in revenue during the first nine months of the current fiscal year 2081/82.

According to Office Chief Praveen Shrestha, the revenue was generated from new vehicle registrations, license renewals, and the issuance of driving licenses between Shrawan and Chaitra (mid-July, 2024 to mid-April 2025).

Out of the total amount, Rs 78.71 million was collected from the distribution of driving licenses, Rs 282.74 million from vehicle taxes, Rs 71.58 million from income generated through various transport services, Rs 31.49 million under federal allocations, and Rs 8,250 from the settlement of outstanding dues.

Chekampar locals head to Baju Lake for Yarsagumba harvest

Residents of Chekampar, Ward No. 7 of Chumanubri Rural Municipality, have begun their annual migration to Baju Lake to harvest Yarsagumba, a highly prized medicinal herb found in the Himalayan highlands.

According to local resident Chhiringphunjo Lama, villagers have already started the journey, while others are still preparing. “Some have already left, and some are getting ready,” he said. “But worsening weather conditions are making travel more difficult.”

Over 2,000 tourists visit Shuklaphanta National Park in six months

A total of 2,388 tourists visited Shuklaphanta National Park, Kanchanpur, in the first six months of the current fiscal year. Of the total visitors, 1,160 were women and 1,228 were men. The majority, 2,181, were domestic tourists.

According to Purushottam Wagle, Information Officer at the Park Office, 90 visitors were from SAARC countries, including 27 women and 63 men.

Additionally, 117 foreign tourists visited the park during this period, comprising 48 women and 69 men. The highest number of visitors was recorded in Chaitra, with 520 tourists entering the park.

Free altitude sickness treatment begins at Muktinath Temple

Free health care services have been arranged for pilgrims suffering from altitude sickness at Muktinath Temple, a revered pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists.

The initiative is a joint effort by the Provincial Hospital in Jomsom and the Waragung Muktikshetra Rural Municipality, aimed at assisting religious tourists who fall ill due to high altitude.

Located at an elevation of around 3,800 meters above sea level, Muktinath often sees pilgrims affected by altitude sickness. To address this, a ‘High Altitude Treatment Center’ has been established within the temple premises, providing emergency care to those in need.

Clean, safe drinking water is a practical right: Minister Yadav

Minister for Water Supply Pradeep Yadav has stated that clean and safe drinking water is no longer just an aspiration for Nepali citizens but is now being realized as a practical right.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Nangedanda Comprehensive Pumping Drinking Water Scheme in Wards 5 and 6 of Sunkoshi Rural Municipality, Sindhuli, Minister Yadav emphasized that ensuring access to safe drinking water—from remote villages to urban centers—is a top priority of the government.

GP Koirala National Center for Respiratory Diseases launches dialysis services
