PM Oli calls for collaborative efforts to combat climate change impacts

NEW YORK: Prime Minister (PM) KP Oli has called on the global community to develop an integrated climate adaptation action plan that addresses environmental challenges from the mountains to the sea.

Speaking at the high-level plenary meeting on ‘Challenges Caused by Sea Level Rise’ during the 79th United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Oli highlighted the urgent consequences of global carbon emissions, noting that the mountains of Nepal are experiencing significant melting.

He pointed out that the melting of two-thirds of Asia’s mountains has led to the drying up of at least 10 major river systems, making an integrated climate adaptation action plan essential.

Emphasizing the Himalayas as a vital ‘recharge system,’ Prime Minister Oli called for a global collaborative effort to mitigate their melting and curb rising sea temperatures.

“Let’s implement climate justice by collectively working to control harmful emissions and pollution. We must agree that countries responsible for emissions should fairly compensate those affected,” he stated.

He also urged the United Nations to organize a dedicated meeting for Himalayan and island nations next year to tackle these pressing challenges.

In a separate address at the United Nations Climate Change Insecure Forum, Prime Minister Oli reiterated the call for developed nations to allocate additional funds to the climate finance pool as outlined in the Paris Agreement.

He further invited leaders from member states to participate in the upcoming “Sagarmatha Dialogue” to be held in Nepal.
