KATHMANDU: Senior leader of Unified Socialist Party, Jhalnath Khanal, has announced that he would not contest the by-election in Ilam-2 to be held on April 27.
Talking to Khabarhub, Khanal stated his decision not to stand as a candidate but to endorse a youth candidate from his party.
Khanal expressed, “I don’t intend to contest this time. Let the youth step forward. Our young comrades can take the lead.”
He mentioned that the candidate from the Unified Socialist Party will be finalized by Wednesday.
Initially rumored to be a candidate from the Left Alliance, Khanal withdrew from the race after the UML decided to field Suhang Nemwang, the son of the late Subash Nemwang, who was the party’s Vice Chairman.
Meanwhile, the Rastriya Swatantra Party has also announced its intention to nominate a candidate, although the specific candidate has not yet been named.
It should be noted that during the previous election, CPN-UML candidate, Subash Nemwang secured 30,020 votes, while Nepali Congress leader Dambar Bahadur Khadka received 29,906 votes.
Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress has informally indicated its intention to nominate the district president, Dambar Khadka, although no formal decision has been made yet.
