PM discusses TU reforms in informal senate meeting

KATHMANDU: An informal University Senate meeting to discuss reforms and challenges at Tribhuvan University (TU) took place on Sunday, led by Prime Minister and Chancellor KP Sharma Oli at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.

The three-hour meeting brought together university professors, employees, students, public campus representatives, and other stakeholders to share their perspectives and propose solutions to pressing issues at TU.

During the meeting, Oli highlighted the need for TU officials to focus on actionable reforms and consult stakeholders further to address key concerns. He called for productive discussions and cautioned against distractions, referencing misinformation spread on social media about the university’s agenda from the December 12 meeting in Kirtipur.

“The progress and reputation of Tribhuvan University are shared responsibilities. My only interest is to strengthen this institution by promoting transparency and ensuring meritocracy,” said PM Oli.

He also urged TU to follow its academic calendar, share achievements transparently through its website, and ensure fairness in academic evaluations.

On the topic of appointments, Oli clarified that his role as Chancellor is to support the university’s growth, while decision-making remains the responsibility of the concerned authorities.

“They must take accountability for both successes and shortcomings,” he added.

The Prime Minister suggested forming a task force to implement recommendations from the Committee on TU’s movable and immovable property. He also urged the TU Service Commission to improve its operations, especially by holding regular exams.

Key officials, including Education Minister and Pro-Chancellor Bidya Bhattarai, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Kesharjung Baral, and Secretary of the Ministry of Education Dr. Deepak Kafle, attended the meeting.
