Nepali Army defuses IED in Bhairahawa

RUPANDEHI: The Nepali Army deactivated a ‘pressure cooker bomb’, an improvised explosive device (IED) found at the Universal College of Medical Sciences in Bhairahawa on Friday.

A squad of the Bhairahawa-based Kali Bhakti Battalion of the Nepali Army disposed of the IED.

A gardener of the Medical College spotted the IED at around 10.30 am while he was cutting a tree in the College premises, said spokesperson of the District Police Office Rupandehi, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Suraj Karki.

“The device was in rusted condition and the bomb disposal squad of the Army has defused it. It is not known who planted it and when. We have initiated an investigation in this connection,” DSP Karki said.

According to him, the pressure cooker handle was tied with a rope, and battery and timer was also fitted to it. The ‘cooker bomb’ was found kept inside a bag.

The Medical College administration had informed the police after finding the IED.
