KATHMANDU: The highly anticipated ICC Under 19 Men’s Cricket World Cup is set to commence on January 19, 2024, featuring a thrilling double-header with hosts South Africa facing off against the West Indies, and Ireland taking on the USA.
Nepal, participating for the eighth time since its debut in 2000, is placed in Group D alongside formidable opponents Afghanistan, New Zealand, and Pakistan.
The young Nepali team, hungry for success, will clash with New Zealand on January 21, followed by a match against Pakistan on January 24 and Afghanistan on January 26.
The Nepali squad, led by captain Dev Khanal, includes promising talents including Arjun Kumal, Aakash Tripathi, Dipak Prasad Dumre, Durgesh Gupta, Gulshan Kumar Jha, Dipesh Prasad Kandel, Bishal Bikram KC, Subhash Bhandari, Deepak Bohara, Dipak Bohara, Uttam Rangu Thapa Macar, Bipin Rawal, Tilak Raj Bhandari and Akash Chand.
In a commendable display of form, Nepal showcased its prowess by defeating Scotland and Namibia in the warm-up matches, setting a positive tone for their World Cup campaign.
Dev Khanal, speaking with the ICC ahead of the tournament, emphasized the unparalleled cricket craze in Nepal. He stated, “We have a huge fanbase back in Nepal, and because of them, we are always motivated. The craze is unmatched. We, as players, want to win matches and give them happiness.”
With India clinching the title five times, followed by Australia with three victories, and Pakistan with two, the competition is fierce.
The stage is set for 16 countries to unleash their rising stars in 41 matches across five venues, showcasing the future of international cricket.
