KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli held a discussion with officials of Medical Education Commission on the problems facing medical education.
The issues like determination of student seats, fee as per private medical college and hostel management featured in the discussion.
Similarly, how jobs in medical and health sectors could be created by catering quality medical education within the country, thereby contributing to the national journey of prosperity was also discussed.
PM Oli spoke on the need of ensuring easy admission for nursing education in any of the institutes recognized by the CTEVT.
He garnered information on immediate meeting of the Commission and preparation for the amendment of the existing Act to easing the admission.
“We should be focused on national interest and just issues which contribute to national prosperity,” PM Oli, who is also the Chairman of the Commission reminded, arguing, “We must not nurture the interest that forces Nepalis students to opt for abroad education.”
The nursing education has been facing hurdles after the provision in clause 12 of National Medical Education Act, 2075 stipulated that for the medical education in the dental and nursing streams, the college must have a 100-bed hospital for practice, otherwise it is not qualified to run the classes.
This very provision is posing problems in harmonizing the calendars of the Commission and the CTEVT.
On the occasion, Vice Chairman of the Commission, Prof Dr Anjani Kumar Jha shared information on the concept notes of seven new institutions and determination of student quota for 28 institutions.
The Commission has been monitoring the colleges of medical education, conducting entrance exams, determining student seats in colleges and the fees as well.
Meanwhile, PM Oli held a discussion with concerned officials and experts on how the dispute between the Kathmandu University and the Dhulikhel Hospital could be settled.
The PM reminded that as both institutions were internationally renowned, unity between them was essential.
The discussion was attended by Former Vice Chancellor of KU, Dr Suresh Raj Sharma, and Dr Ramkanth Makaju, among others.
