78th Independence Day of India celebrated in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu marked India’s 78th Independence Day today.

The event commenced with the Indian Ambassador to Nepal raising the national flag.

Following this, a video address from Hon’ble President of India, Droupadi Murmu, was played.

In her message, President Murmu reviewed the nation’s advancements over the past 77 years and honored the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence, as noted in an Embassy statement.

During the celebration, the Ambassador presented financial support and blankets to the widows and families of deceased Gorkha soldiers from the Indian Armed Forces, totaling NRs 5.50 Crore.

Additionally, NRs 12.55 Crore was allocated to the families of 107 deceased Indian Armed Forces members, covering benefits such as Army Group Insurance (AGI) death benefits, extended insurance, and AGI maturity payments for 2024.

The Embassy also announced book grants for 21 educational institutions and libraries across five provinces in Nepal, aimed at improving educational resources for students in remote regions, based on previous requests.

The event was attended by members of the Indian community in Nepal, friends of India, as well as Embassy officials and their families.

The celebrations featured patriotic songs and dance performances by students and teachers from the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center of the Embassy and Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kathmandu.
