KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has raised concerns over the absence of specific laws addressing climate change issues, directing the government to provide a written response within 15 days regarding the lack of legislation in this critical area.

Justice Balakrishna Dhakal’s single bench has prompted the government to explain why concrete laws pertaining to climate change have not yet been put in place.

Advocate Padma Bahadur Shrestha brought a case against the government on December 21, highlighting the non-compliance with SC directives issued on December 25, 2018, mandating the establishment of laws related to climate change.

The court underscored the urgent necessity of formulating comprehensive legislation dedicated to climate change, stressing its essential enforcement for climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.
