Govt seeks public suggestions to curb corruption

KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal has called for public suggestions to strengthen efforts to control corruption and financial irregularities.

The move aims to introduce immediate improvements in policy, legal, institutional, procedural, and behavioral aspects of governance.

The government has decided to hold heads of offices directly accountable for preventing corruption within their respective institutions. It has urged stakeholders and the general public to provide recommendations to enhance transparency and accountability.

Chief Secretary Suman Raj Aryal stated that office heads must ensure courteous service delivery and strict compliance with the code of conduct by employees, including adherence to neutrality, transparency, ethics, and discipline as outlined in existing laws.

Aryal emphasized that the newly formed government has placed high priority on promoting good governance by addressing corruption at policy, institutional, and procedural levels.

He added that the government aims to build public trust by making civil service delivery more efficient, professional, and ethical, while prioritizing vulnerable groups such as women, children, persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and marginalized communities.

The statement also called for close monitoring of incidents related to corruption, irregularities, and unethical practices within public bodies. It urged that such cases be promptly investigated and reported to the concerned authorities.

Furthermore, it clarified that if corruption or irregularities are detected in any government office, the head of that office will be held primarily responsible, and appropriate mechanisms should be put in place accordingly.

The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring good governance by improving efficiency, economy, transparency, effectiveness, and ethical standards in public service delivery, development management, and administrative operations.

It also stressed the need for proactive measures to prevent misuse of public office in areas such as service delivery, infrastructure development, revenue administration, and procurement processes, with the ultimate goal of establishing integrity and accountability that citizens can tangibly experience.
