President Paudel stresses on engaging students in sports



KATHMANDU: President Ramchandra Paudel has said classrooms are the places for awakening students and sports is a tool for keeping them physically and mentally active as well as disciplined.

In his address to an inaugural session of the third President Running Shield Tournament organized by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City here today, the Head of the State said extra-curricular activities including sports make the education system broader, opening avenues for self-confidence, positivity and talents-valued social life among students.

Describing education and sports as two sides of a coin, the President said sports encourages students to become self-dependent and empowered.

He also drew the attention of authorities concerned for undertaking sufficient efforts for the development and promotion of sports in each level: federal, province and local.

Citing that only books and classroom-based learning is not sufficient to make the student complete, he said sports is instrumental for broadening their learning horizon. It helps them explore new ideas and innovations, according to him.

Also speaking on the occasion, Kathmandu Metropolis mayor Balendra Shah said sports is the means of empowering students physically and mentally, and it should be promoted within from the school.

Deputy mayor Sunita Dangol underlined the need of promoting sports to produce human resources capable to contribute to nation building.

A total of 3,250 students from 83 schools are competing for various tittles in six games: volleyball, Kabbadi, taekwondo, athletics, karate and wushu in the three-day tournament.
