39,000 drivers face action for drunk driving in six months

KATHMANDU: Police took action against 39,272 individuals driving under the influence of alcohol, with an additional 242 prosecuted for driving under the influence of drugs in the last six months.

According to Bhim Prasad Dhakal, the Central Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General of Police, the stringent measures have not only ensured public safety but also generated four crores rupees in revenue from actions against offenders.

Emphasizing the priority given to making passengers, vehicles, and roads safer, Dhakal highlighted the concerted efforts to curb mishaps and lapses.

Data analysis revealed a concerning trend of reckless driving during long-distance journeys, leading to sudden and severe accidents.

The police attributed this behavior to the limited presence of traffic police and restricted access to CCTV surveillance in certain areas.

To counteract this growing trend, the police have implemented various policies at different intervals, aiming to effectively control truancy and lapses.

Dhakal emphasized the collective responsibility of citizens at the local level to ensure safe driving practices.

“Every driver must operate their vehicle responsibly to safeguard their own lives and those of passengers from potential accidents,” he said.

In the first half of the current financial year, an alarming number of traffic violations were recorded across various provinces in Nepal.

Senior Superintendent of Police Rajendra Prasad Bhatta, the spokesperson of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, reported that a total of 18,627 individuals were taken action in the Kathmandu Valley, followed by 2,524 in Koshi Province; 2,021 in Madhes Province; 1,098 in Bagmati; 8,923 in Gandaki; 2,773 in Lumbini; 1,264 in Karnali; and 2,942 in Sudurpaschim Province.
