Biratnagar hosting workshop on combatting misinformation and disinformation

BIRATNAGAR: In an effort to combat the increasing tide of misinformation and disinformation, Project Jagaran, a youth initiative affiliated with the Youth Council under the US Embassy in Nepal, is set to organize a workshop in Biratnagar on November 30 and December 1.

The primary objective of this workshop is to empower young individuals with the skills to discern and counteract misinformation effectively, a statement issued by the Jagaran, said.

The workshop on misinformation and disinformation will take place at Shikshadeep College and Arani College in Biratnagar.

Youth members from the organizing body, the Youth Council, will lead sessions presenting materials aimed at countering misleading information.

The two-hour workshop will equip participants with various methods to distinguish between accurate and false information, the statement added.

In an interaction with local journalsists in Biratnagar, Srija Khanal, the coordinator of Project Jagaran, expressed the urgent need to address the pervasive issue of false information on social media.

She stated, “There is a flood of false information on social media. To mitigate its impact and facilitate a clearer understanding for the general public regarding the difference between false and true information, we have initiated Project Jaagran.”

According to her, Project Jagaran is positioned as a comprehensive campaign working to empower the community by raising awareness among youth against false and misleading information.

This proactive approach seeks to reduce the influence of misinformation and foster a more informed and discerning society, she added.
