KATHMANDU: The hearing on the rape case filed against cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane, scheduled for Sunday, is anticipated to deliver a conclusive verdict.

The continuous postponements of the hearing will now culminate in a decision that could potentially clear Lamichhane of the charges or lead to his custody.

If found guilty, Lamichhane faces a minimum jail term of 10 years. The alleged victim, claiming to be a minor, demands a sentence of 10 to 12 years for the cricketer. However, the precise age of the girl is yet to be confirmed.

The case is framed under section 219 (1) of the National Penal Code Act, 2017, which considers non-consensual sexual intercourse with a woman or a girl child below eighteen years as rape, even with her consent.

Should Lamichhane be found guilty, he could be imprisoned for ten to twelve years, given the girl’s age is above sixteen but below eighteen, as outlined in section 219 (4) of the National Penal Code Act, 2017. Additionally, the court may impose a fine of Rs 500,000.
