Home Minister Shrestha leaves for China for BRI Conference

KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayankaji Shrestha left for China on Monday, leading a delegation of seven members to participate in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) conference.

As a part of the event, Shrestha is set to deliver a ‘keynote speech,’ as confirmed by his secretariat.

Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs facilitated separate invitations from China’s Public Security and Emergency Minister and Party Committee Secretary Wang Xiangxi, as well as Ecology and Environment Minister Huang Runqiu, to Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha.

Wang, a member of the Secretariat and State Councilor of the Communist Party of China, is anticipated to engage in discussions with Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha concerning bilateral cooperation and relations.

During the inaugural day of the conference, Shrestha is slated to attend a dinner hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Leaders from almost three dozen countries are expected to participate in this gathering.

The Belt and Road Forum serves as a platform for the review and assessment of the implementation and advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a vital international project initiated by China to foster sustainable development, promote connectivity, encourage collaboration between nations, and safeguard the environment.

Joining the visiting delegation are Joint Secretary and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amrit Bahadur Rai, as well as the Head of the Disaster and Risk Reduction Authority, Anil Pokharel, among others.
