KATHMANDU: Gagan Thapa, the General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, has voiced criticism against the government’s decision to prohibit the use of the popular social networking platform TikTok.

Thapa expressed disapproval of the immediate ban on TikTok in Nepal, asserting that the decision made during today’s cabinet meeting has a detrimental impact on social harmony and the overall social environment.

Taking to social media to convey his reaction, General Secretary Thapa stated, “While regulation is necessary to deter misuse of social media, outright closure of social networks in the name of regulation is entirely misguided.”

He emphasized that the issue at hand is not just about whether a social network should be closed or not but revolves around the government’s underlying intentions. Thapa pointed out that the government’s actions appear to be aimed at restricting expression and personal freedom.

“The government should reconsider this course of action and rectify its approach, as it seems to be undermining the principles of free expression and individual liberties,” General Secretary Thapa urged.
